Northumberland Labour Leader visits Energy Central to meet with apprentices and students to discuss how the campus supports them.

Councillor Scott Dickinson recently visited the Energy Central Campus in Blyth to meet with tutors, students, and apprentices who have succeeded in obtaining apprenticeships in the manufacturing or welding industry. During the visit, Cllr Dickinson learned about the various opportunities the site offers to support young and adult learners from across Northumberland in accessing welding and manufacturing courses at the new facility.

Cllr Dickinson had a conversation with a learner named Joseph, whose story is quite a success. Joseph left school and aimed to secure an apprenticeship. However, he did not initially achieve the required math grade of 4 (C). As a result, he enrolled in our Level 2 full-time program while retaking his math exam. Joseph demonstrated exceptional attitudes and behaviours, ultimately impressing a local employer who offered him a Level 3 Metal Fabricator apprenticeship.

Cllr Dickinson was particularly interested in the business partnerships, including a program by the DWP in partnership with Universal Wolf/Stellex. This program offers a 6-week course for the unemployed to gain a qualification and work experience, leading to potential job opportunities.

Councillor Scott Dickinson said, "I want young people, adults looking to learn new skills, and businesses to be aware that this facility is available to help create well-rounded and job-ready individuals to support the job opportunities here in Northumberland, as well as those that will come as a result of recent government successes. The facilities are fantastic for those seeking careers in a wide range of jobs in the welding and manufacturing industry.

The team there is dedicated, professional, and well-respected, and individuals are guaranteed to receive the support they need. It was great to see some of the local well-established businesses supporting the site, from Hadston up to Blyth and everywhere in between, providing learners with valuable placements. I look forward to continuing to work with them and deliver for the people of Northumberland, so that individuals with the relevant skills are homegrown and ready to take on new opportunities. I thank them for inviting me."
