Northumberland Labour echoes Labour’s national plans for a strong economy
Northumberland Labour says the party’s national plans for a strong economy will benefit everyone living in the county.
Leader Scott Dickinson said : “The news of government support for the Britishvolt gigaplant at Cambois is very welcome and comes after years of joint working between the company, the council, other businesses and politicians from all parties. This is exactly what we need to strengthen the economy and ensure young people don’t feel they need to leave the county to get a well paid job.
“We’re delighted the company wants to recruit employees locally; it’s a fantastic boost for the area. We have to support our schools and colleges to make sure young people are ready and equipped for these jobs and that people who haven’t been in work can retrain so they can join the workforce.
Shadow Cabinet for Business Lynne Grimshaw said: “It’s nowhere near the levelling up talked about by the Business Secretary on his visit to the area, but it’s a start, and we welcome that. To truly put us on a par with the South East the government would literally have to reverse its investment in the South East. We know in reality that’s not going to happen but if the Tories mean it they should put their money where their mouth is.
“Our county, and in particular Blyth and Cambois, are fast becoming the green capital of the UK.
“Labour’s plans for a stronger economy include making sure our education and training systems equip people with the skills they need to take up these jobs, bringing research and development away from London so small and medium innovative businesses can be supported and thrive and ensuring we buy, make and sell British goods and services in Britain.”
