Nation’s diversity should be celebrated
As Black History Month has come to an end Northumberland Labour says the month is a chance to reflect on our nation’s diversity.
Northumberland Labour leader Scott Dickinson said: “Black History Month happens in October, but just because it has come to an end there’s no reason to stop.
“It’s worth reflecting that after the Second World War people from the Commonwealth were invited to come to the UK to help the country recover. So many British men had been lost in the war the UK would never have recovered without them.
“They took the brave step to come to the place that they had been told would value and care for them, and many found anything but. Many people were faced with hostility, but without them, it would have been impossible to set up and run the NHS and many other vital services people depended on.
“Northumberland County Council’s chief executive Daljit Lally, a former NHS nurse, is a leading example of inclusiveness, regardless of recent issues and unacceptable behaviour towards her.
“Our country is richer for its diversity. Diversity not just this month but all year round.”
