More help needed for those affected by Covid
Labour says community hubs should be better resourced to offer support to people
Northumberland Labour is calling for more help and support for people suffering from the long term effects of Covid (commonly known as long Covid) and the mental health issues brought on by the virus.
Northumberland Labour leader Scott Dickinson said: “We understand some people have issues that are not currently identified for medical support but are really anxious and often left depressed with not feeling 100 per cent for many many months after Covid. We think there should be more in community hubs to support those trying to deal with this.
“Having had Covid myself and knowing that still now, 18 months on, my smell and taste has not returned is an anxious feeling. Those with long-term breathing and other issues have long-term health anxiety and various mental health issues.
“We all know mental health is currently under-funded and felt not to be as important as it should be. Some communities need services in their community hubs to bring those people together to get support and speak with others so they know they are not alone.
“There’s no doubt we are still in this pandemic but we must also focus on recovery and support for people who are finding life difficult. It would be ideal if some of the unspent Covid funding could act as community recovery money and provide real support and service.
“Northumberland Labour will be pressing council leaders to give this vital issues the priority it deserves and would be pleased to hear from anyone who is affected to help design and provide the services needed.”
