Copping out of COP27 sends the wrong signal about tackling climate change
Climate change is the end of humanity as we know it, not the end of planet Earth, says Northumberland Labour Northumberland Labour says it’s disappointed to hear the new PM is not attending COP27. Leader Scott Dickinson said: “After Britain hosted COP26 in Glasgow last year it beggars belief that the new PM chooses not to attend the climate conference in Egypt. It sends the wrong signal about his commitment to tackling climate change. “It’s also very disheartening to hear that the new environment secretary Thérèse Coffey sees COP27 as ‘just a group of people meeting in Egypt’ and the best she can think of when asked what she is doing in her own life to contribute to tackling the climate crisis is not throw away the cups she uses at home. Really, we deserve better than this. “What the Tory government seems unable to grasp is climate change signals the end of life on earth as we know it for humanity; ie for you, me and our children. Planet Earth will survive, in fact it will do a lot better without us as we continue to pump carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, clear forests and drive many creatures to extinction. “We only need to look at the rising temperatures, floods and wildfires to see the damage that climate change is doing to the planet. If this continues there will be mass migration from affected areas. “Labour wants to make sure it is doing the right thing for this generation and those that follow by supporting green initiatives and insulating homes to make them cheaper to run. It is possible to grow the economy and consider the wellbeing of the climate at the same time. Labour has the will to do it.”
