What's acceptable and what's not ?

Today I will be talking to the Police about Anti-Social Behaviour and other issues raised by local residents first and foremost.

We will also be discussing the "harassment" of elected members, what's acceptable and what's not in the eyes of the police (especially in the run up to an election).

As Business Chair of Northumberland County Council I have a duty to protect all elected officials and make sure they have the correct advice for those who overstep the mark. You only have to read the recent reports at Standards Committee and consequences for elected members and members of the public to see how seriously we take the matter.

While elected members may put themselves forward to represent the public this does not mean they then become an object for any type of personalised campaigns.

This includes taking photos of people, making accusations, repeatedly emailing and messaging without engagement, reporting of fake breaking of the law, posting fake news and information about people on social media or in any other form, receiving threats or anything else via social media or in person.

We will also be talking about election material and what is contained in that about opponents and how candidates of any political party can ensure they know how to complain and bring it to the attention of the police quickly, also how to deal with legitimate concerns around third party advice on what has happened or alleged to have been said or done about someone.

Quite sad when it comes to this amount time being spent on such an issue but very important none the less and seems to be a sign of the times we are in.
